Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is thought of by many as being time consuming but at the same time  many realise it can produce top ranking results.

SEO comprises of many strategies whereby the main focus is to optimise a website where the search engine robots can crawl for relevant content and rank the results it finds.

Obviously most individuals and companies want to see their websites ranked on the 1st page of the major search engines. Most want to be ranked in the first 3 listings as being listed here could potentially yield the highest return on investment.

SEO can also be very lucrative because if you are selling products or services and your website gets found by your target audience then potentially this could yield many sales.

Most people want to know just how to create an effective SEO campaign? Below is an overview of the various steps that must be done to optimise a website:

1. When first designing a website, incorporating keywords or search terms in the meta tags is highly important. Creating the website content should be based around creating text or sections of paragraphs that relates to that particular web page. The keywords/key phrases need to be related to the products or services being promoted on that web page and also the website. Basically, it all needs to be congruent.

2. Incorporating graphics into the website is equally important. People who look at your website will many times skip over the text content and be drawn to the images. The search engine robots does not consider images as a content that can be indexed but it can still be indexed by adding keywords on the alt attribute of the image tag.

3. Creating backlinks to other high ranking websites is key. By linking your site to other sites with high page ranks will boost your website’s ranking. The more relevant in content the site your own site links to the better for search engine ranking results.

4. When optimising your website you need to become highly pro-active. Relying on the search engines to provide ranking results alone is not enough. Instead you have to take the lead and promote your site through article writing, blogging, video marketing, social media marketing, social book marking etc. It will be a continuous daily effort!

5. Use analytics to track your results. Many individuals and companies do not adequately undertake this but this is fundamental. You need to know how your site is performing. let’s face it, you may have expended, time, effort and money into optimising your site, so at the very least monitor your site’s performance daily.

3 SEO Strategies To Use In 2011!

New SEO strategies are being formulated all the time. It’s true to say that SEO is something that does not keep still and one always has to be mindful of new ways to achieve higher search rankings and in the process increase the organisation’s ROI.

Going forward in 2011, many companies want to know what are the essential SEO strategies that can be incorporated which will keep them ahead of their competitors.

Below, I outline 3 important SEO strategies that your company can start to implement straightaway:

1. Optimise For Speed:

For web users who visit your site there can be nothing more frustrating than having to wait for your site pages to load. Users are impatient and want to be able to access the content on your site as fast as humanly possible. If they find that they have to wait for the pages to load then they could very well surf off to another site. If the site is an ecommerce site then it is absolutely critical that your pages load fast as you don’t want to lose a customer at the pivotal point of purchase.

Optimising your site and decreasing the speed or latency can increase the ROI. Some ways to do this for faster customer browsing is to minify CSS or Java Script, try and merge includes and ensure images are optimised.

2. Ensure Good Content Management System (CMS) Practices:

Having complete authority to optimise your site is really important. Many CEO’s or CTO’s of large organisations like to keep complete control over their SEO’er and are mindful of giving complete authority over to a Head of SEO. As an SEO’er within an organisation it is important to know how much authority you will be given to work on the SEO.

If the company uses a Content Management System (CMS), then once again the Executive will need to know how much authority they will be given to use this. With new people coming into the company, the education and training is paramount as everyone will need to be completely aware of the company’s SEO procedures and working from the same page so to speak.

The site’s internal linking is also very important. Make sure they are all consistent and they are not linking to “404′s errors.” Ensure that good relevancy keywords are used in linking and are not spammy but instead describe the products in a descriptive way.

3. Social Media Marketing (SMM):

This is fast becoming the way to market online in 2011. Of course, your company will employ this strategy alongside other online marketing strategies. Social Media Marketing (SMM) can be a very beneficial way to spread the word about your company’s products or services and build relationships with your customers.

Using Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon, Digg, Reddit and Delicious, amongst others, allows you to get your company’s message out to a larger audience. The question is, can this effect SEO? Well if you get 100 visitors then one of those visitors may make a blog post or a link and that blog post or link could eventually flow Page Rank or send more visitors.

The key thing with using SEO and SMM is to take a holistic view. It is essential to have compelling content on your site which will drive traffic and then you need to tell people about it and SMM can be an excellent way to do this.
